So showtime things kickoff.  When I say "repairing" damaged veneer, we're non actually replacing the damaged pieces with new veneer.  What we're doing is simply removing the damaged pieces and filling the missing sections in with Bondo.  This will only work if you're planning to paint the piece, as you cannot stain over Bondo.

Supplies

The first thing you lot'll need to do is remove any loose or bubbling veneer.  I use my putty knife to get under the loose sections and pry it off.  Yous tin as well utilise a utility knife to cutting out bubbled sections if needed.

In one case yous've pulled off all the loose pieces, lightly sand that expanse with a sanding block.  This simply knocks off any piddling splinters that might nevertheless be hanging on.  When you lot're done sanding, wipe information technology down to get rid of any dust.

Now let's talk about Bondo for a sec.  This stuff stinks!  I just piece of work with it exterior because it really does have a super stiff odor.

The Bondo comes in 2 parts: inside the tin is a gray-colored putty.  At that place's also a small tube of reddish colored foam (yous'll notice it inside the lid).  This is the hardening agent.

Using a disposable plastic knife, I scoop some of the gray putty onto a paper plate.  Squirt a petty of the red hardening agent onto the putty and thoroughly mix the two together with your knife.

I don't do verbal measurements when I mix upward my Bondo, but according to the company this is the ratio for mixing the putty with the hardener:

"For a iii-inch diameter circle of filler (approx. ane/2-inch thick), clasp out a 3-inch ribbon or strip of foam hardener. Or, use a golf ball size amount of filler, squeeze out a 1 1/4-inch ribbon or strip of cream hardener. Filler should be a pinkish/salmon colour when properly mixed, using red cream hardener."

Important: Do non mix your Bondo together until you're absolutely ready to use it.  Information technology starts to dry and harden very rapidly and yous take to piece of work fast.  If you lot mix it upward before you're ready, it'll be hard as a stone inside a few minutes.

Utilize your putty knife to shine the Bondo into the missing section.  You want it to be higher than the existing veneer so you accept room to sand, but endeavour not to overfill it as well much.  It does dry to a very hard stop and it can be a pain to have to sand a ton of information technology off if yous but glob information technology on there actually thick.  You won't have more than a couple minutes to play with it and shine it out before it starts to harden.  Clean your putty knife off immediately when you're finished.

I'm going to switch dressers in this next moving-picture show so I tin show yous some mistakes I made on my first endeavor.

See the petty divot by the blue arrow?  I didn't put enough Bondo there and I had to do a second application to fill that in.  And run into how I just kind of smeared it on and didn't try to smooth it out very well?  Information technology'due south so much easier to sand to a shine finish if y'all try to smooth information technology out with your putty knife when you showtime apply information technology.

In one case it's completely dry, just sand it and you're set to pigment.  And if it isn't as smooth every bit you lot would similar after the beginning awarding, merely fill and sand it again (like I had to do my kickoff couple tries).

Here'southward a earlier and subsequently flick of the same dresser drawer and the above photo.

I've used this technique multiple times to fill up sections approximately the size of my hand or a little bigger.  I'm not certain it would work if one-half the veneer was missing.  At that point, you lot might be amend off just removing all the veneer down to the solid wood underneath.

Some other thought: although I've yet to effort it, I've read that if you have a small-scale bubbling section of veneer, yous can sometimes reactivate the glue with a hot atomic number 26.  It's something I demand to look into more and try myself earlier recommending it, but if you lot've used that method I'd honey for you to share your results with united states of america.
